Everyone's Racing to the Finish Line

Friends Comedy GIF by ABC Network

It's October, and you can feel the shift.

Everyone's heads-down trying to finish the year strong. There are deals to close and targets to hit, and the pressure to end on a high note is everywhere.

That's good. You should finish strong.

But here's what I notice almost every single year…

In all that sprinting to finish the year, almost nobody is using these next 90 days to build the team that wins next year.

Hiring becomes the thing that gets pushed.

"We're slammed closing out the year, let's just start the search in January."

And that one decision, to wait until January, quietly costs companies their best possible hires.

And most business leaders realize it's happening.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Here's a number I keep coming back to, because it really puts things in perspective…

Of the more than 10k people I've placed over the years, just over 46% of them happened in Q4.

🚨 Nearly half… Happens in Q4!

That's not luck, and it's not seasonal noise. It's a pattern I've watched play out year after year, and it comes down to one thing…

Q4 is when the best people actually move.

Once you understand why, the whole final stretch of the year starts to look very different.

Why Q4 Is When Everybody Moves

Think about where everyone's head is right now, on both sides of the table.

Companies finally have the full picture.

You've had nine months to see what's working and what isn't, so you know exactly what you need to fix heading into the new year. For the first time all year, it's clear what your team is actually missing.

Candidates are doing the same math, just about their own lives.

The best people are quietly asking themselves whether they grew this year, whether they got where they wanted to be, whether they're still challenged or just comfortable.

That year-end reckoning is what makes a happy, employed A-player suddenly open to a conversation they'd have brushed off back in June.

And the market keeps shifting underneath all of it, which nudges both sides to make a move while the timing feels right.

Put it together and Q4 is the one time of year when the people you want and the clarity you need show up at the same moment.

The window is wide open.

The Trap That Catches Almost Everyone

Here's the mistake, and it's the one I watch good companies make over and over.

❌ They decide to wait.
"Things are crazy right now, we'll kick off the search in the new year."

But here's what happens…The A-players already moved.

They made their decisions in Q4, signed their offers in December, and they're starting the new year strong at their new company.

They're not about to switch again in January.

By waiting until the new year, you didn't get an early start on it. You showed up late to a party that already ended. Now you're picking through whoever is left, instead of choosing from the best.

❝

The companies that win the new year are the ones who did their hiring before it started.

What to Do With the Next 90 Days

You don't have to choose between finishing this year and building next year. You can do both.

It just takes a little intention in a season where most people have none left to spare.

Start now, not in January.

Figure out the one or two roles that will matter most to you in the first quarter, and begin those conversations today, while the right people are still open to them.

And go find them, don't wait for them.

The A-players are feeling that itch right now, but they're not sitting on job boards. You have to reach out directly, while they're in that rare year-end headspace.

The person you start talking to in October can be signed in December and starting strong in January.

That's the whole game.

While your competitors are "waiting until the new year," you're the one they'll wish they had beaten to it.

One Thing Before Next Tuesday

Pick the single most important hire you'll need in the first quarter of next year.

Don't wait for January to start it.

This week, name that role, get clear on who would be exceptional in it, and start one real conversation.

Ninety days from now, you'll either be starting the year with that person on your team, or starting the search everyone else is just getting around to.

Those are two very different ways to begin a year.

Key Takeaway

Everyone pours their Q4 energy into finishing this year.

The smarter move is to also use it to build next year, because Q4 is when the best people actually make their moves.

Wait until January and you're not early, you're late.

The companies that win next year are hiring for it right now.

Let's Map Your Q4 Hire

One more thing, and there's genuinely no catch to it.

If there's a key role you know you need to fill before the year is out, I'll get on a call with you.

We'll map out exactly who you need and how to land them before January, while the best people are still in play.

No pitch, no pressure, no strings.

This New AI Hiring Law Could Quietly Put Your Company in Court

In this video, I break down the new EU AI hiring law and explain how it can quietly put your company, your ATS, and your AI screening tools at serious legal risk even if you operate in the US.
I walk through why AI hiring systems are classified as high-risk under the EU AI Act, what that means for resume screeners, candidate rankers, interview scorers, and emotion-detection tools, and how a single European candidate can pull your whole hiring process under EU regulation.
