The August Advantage

I'll Be Honest With You… August has a reputation.
The one where everyone quietly agrees to take their foot off the gas until Labor Day. Vacations get priority. Decisions get deferred. Hiring gets pushed to September/October when the energy comes back and the Q4 pressures start looming.
It is an easy rhythm to fall into. And most companies do.
But here is what I have noticed watching my clients year after year.
The ones who treat August as a pause are not resting. They are falling behind the ones who figured out that this month is actually one of the best kept secrets in hiring!
Because the data tells a very different story than the reputation.
What the Numbers Actually Show
Zeki, a talent intelligence firm that tracks global hiring trends, analyzed hiring activity across a five year period from 2021 to 2025. What they found should stop every founder and hiring manager reading this in their tracks!
August ranks as the fifth strongest hiring month of the year.
Not the slowest. The fifth strongest.
Only slightly behind September (the month everyone saves their energy for).
LinkedIn's Workforce Report confirmed the same finding. US hiring activity in August was essentially unchanged compared to July. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows millions of hires completed throughout August every single year.
The slowdown most companies feel in August is not a market reality… It is a collective behavioral assumption.
Everyone believes it is slow so everyone acts like it is slow. And in doing so they create a window that almost nobody is walking through.
What This Actually Means for You
Think about what happens to the talent pool in August.
🚨 Strong candidates do not stop thinking about their careers because it is summer.
🚨 Senior professionals who have been quietly considering a move are still considering it.
🚨 The A-player who has been watching your company from a distance is still watching.oh then no
🚨 The high performer who is underpaid and underappreciated at their current company is still underpaid and underappreciated.
What changes in August is not candidate availability... What changes is company behavior.
Your competitors slow down.
✅ Hiring managers go on vacation.
✅ Decision making gets pushed. Interview processes stall.
✅ The companies that were competing with you for the same talent pool in June and July are now collectively taking their foot off the gas.
That is your window.
The candidate you reach out to in August is not competing against five other interview processes running simultaneously.
Your outreach lands in an inbox that is quieter than it has been all year. Your conversation gets more attention.
Your offer, if it comes, lands without a competing offer right behind it.
August is not the dead month…
It is the month when your competition goes to sleep and leaves the field open.
The Data Couldn’t Be Clearer
ICIMS published their July 2026 Workforce Report this month with data from over three million global platform users.
Job openings are up 19% year over year while actual hiring stayed flat for the third consecutive month.
Application volume is running 5% below the June baseline → meaning fewer active candidates are flooding the market right now.
Read that again. More open roles. Fewer candidates actively applying.
The companies that are actively sourcing right now, not waiting for applications, not posting and praying… Are operating in the least competitive talent environment of the past eighteen months.
Put the August Advantage to Work
❌ Most companies will spend this month waiting.
🏆 Here is what to do instead.
Start with a role planning session this week.
Get your leadership team in a room (even a 45 minute call) and get clear on what you actually need to hire for in Q4.
Most companies figure this out in October when they are already behind and scrambling. Getting that clarity now means you can start sourcing and have a new hire inplace before September.Know the role.
Know the X-Factor you are looking for. Know what a great candidate looks like before you ever start looking. Then launch a pipeline building sprint.
Once you know what you need, spend 30 minutes a day reaching out to the right people.
3x personalized connection requests a day, 3x LinkedIn voice notes with a genuine follow up message.
By the end of this week you have 15 warm conversations started before the September rush begins and before your competition wakes up and floods the same candidates with the same outreach all at once.
And when you reach out, make it personal.
Here is the kind of message that actually gets a reply:
"Hey [Name]
I have been following your work for a while and something came up that made me think of you specifically. Would you be open to a quick chat this month?
August tends to be a good time to catch up before things get busy again."
Short. Human. No pressure.
It references them specifically, gives them a reason to say yes and uses August itself as the excuse to connect.
Most people will respond to that. Most people will not respond to a job description pasted into a LinkedIn message.
Plan it this week. Work it every day.
And by Labor Day you will not be starting the search. You will be closing it.
I call this Proactive Hiring
One Thing Before Next Tuesday
Pick one role you have been delaying and commit to recruiting for it this week.
Not posting it on a job board. ACTIVELY recruiting for it.
Identifying who you want. Reaching out directly. Starting the conversation before September turns the volume back up.
This one move, this week, is going to have such a powerful ROI, come October.
Key Takeaway
August feels slow because everyone treats it that way. But the data shows it is not.
Candidates are still available. Competition is at its lowest point of the year. And the companies that use this month as their secret weapon will quietly close the hires that everyone else pushed to September/October (and wonder why those who decided to act in August started Q4 so strong).

Thinking about hiring globally? Start with an EOR.
The best person for your next role might not live near your office—or even in the same country.
More companies are realizing they don't need to open entities everywhere just to access global talent. Instead, they're using EOR to hire internationally faster, stay compliant, and avoid building local infrastructure before they're ready.
Oyster's EOR helps companies hire, pay, and support employees in 180+ countries while Oyster handles payroll, compliance, taxes, and local employment requirements.
