Two Numbers That Should Worry You

The iHire 2026 State of Online Recruiting Report landed this week, and two specific numbers jumped out.
The top frustration for employers this year?
First, too many unqualified applicants, named by 55.7%.
Second place, close behind at 51.6%? Candidates who ghost them.
If you're hiring right now, you probably read that and nodded. Of course.
Everyone's drowning in bad applicants.
Everyone's getting ghosted.
That's just what hiring feels like now.
But I want to push on that, because I think we're all reading it wrong.
Those two things are not the problem. They're the symptom.
And the actual problem is something most companies are doing to themselves without realizing it.
Where All Those Bad Applicants Come From
Let's start with the flood of unqualified people.
Here's what's actually happening on the other side.
Candidates now have AI tools that apply to jobs for them, hundreds at a time, with almost no effort.
The AI picks the roles.
The AI sends the applications.
And most of the time, the candidate never even reviews what went out.
So when you post a job to the open market, sure, some real people who actually want the role will apply.
But on top of them, you catch a flood of applications the AI fired off on someone's behalf.
Most of those people don't really want the job. A lot of them don't even know they applied to it.
That's not a candidate quality problem.
That's what posting to a job board gets you in 2026… You cast the widest possible net, and it comes back holding a few fish you wanted and a hundred you didn't.
Stop Posting And Praying
Here's what I tell every client who's drowning in this.
Stop posting and praying.

The best people you want to hire are not sitting on job boards firing off a hundred applications...
They're employed. They're good at what they do.
They're not looking, which means they'll never be in your pile no matter how long you wait.
So go get them.
Instead of posting a role and hoping the right person stumbles in, go find the specific people who'd be great at it, and reach out. Engage them. Make them aware of the opportunity.
Build a real conversation with someone who actually fits, instead of sifting through a hundred people who don't.
When you source this way, the whole equation flips.
Your ratio of qualified conversations goes way up, because you chose who to talk to.
And the ghosting drops, because you're talking to people you specifically went and found, not strangers who forgot they applied.
Tools Make This Easier Than It Sounds
Now, I know the pushback…
It sounds great, but who has time to go hunting for passive candidates one by one?
The good news is you don't have to do it by hand anymore. There are real tools built for exactly this.
LinkedIn is the obvious one, and for a lot of roles the data is right there.
The people you want are often on it, with their backgrounds laid out. The catch is it's manual. You dig, you filter, you reach out, one profile at a time.
It works, but it's a grind.
And not every great candidate is even on it.
Depending on the role and the industry, the best people you want may not be there at all.
❌ Fish only on LinkedIn and you miss entire pools of talent.
That's why I built VINE AI. I wanted to find the right people anywhere, for any role.
VINE surfaces them fast and hands them straight to you, so you spend your time on the conversation, not the search.
But the tool matters less than the shift, though. Whatever you use, the point is the same.
🏆 Go find the right people on purpose. Don't sit and wait for the wrong ones to flood in.
Your Free Playbook
Knowing you should reach out to passive people is one thing.
But knowing what to actually say, without sounding like spam, is where most people freeze.
So I put my exact approach into a one-page guide.
It's the four-message sequence I use to turn a total stranger into a real conversation, with a real example of what each message sounds like.
It's yours, completely free.

One Thing Before Next Tuesday
Look at your last open role and ask one honest question.
Did you post it and wait? Or did you go find the people you actually wanted?
If it was the first one, that's your unqualified-applicant problem and your ghosting problem, both answered in a single sentence.
Before your next hire, pick five people who'd genuinely be great and reach out to them directly, before you post anything at all.
See how different those conversations feel.
Key Takeaway
Too many unqualified applicants and too much ghosting aren't two separate problems.
They're the same problem wearing two faces, and that problem is posting and praying.
The fix isn't a better job board or a smarter filter. It's going out and finding the right people yourself, on purpose, instead of waiting for the wrong ones to find you.
